CSOYO Audition Information

2020-2021 CSOYO Audition Requirements

(Please see below for important changes in RED updated on 4/21/20)

ELIGIBILITY:

  1. All current or past CSOYO members must re-audition every year.
  2. CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE ORCHESTRA:

The CSOYO has four orchestras. Students must audition for a specific orchestra based on their level of skill and experience. (Please consult with your teacher or director for assistance in selecting the correct orchestra for your current skill level.)

                Prelude (strings only): 1-2 years of experience

                Etude (strings only): 2-3 years of experience

                Philharmonic (all instruments): intermediate level

                Symphony (all instruments):  advanced level

Applicants who are not chosen for their selected orchestra may be considered for membership in a lower orchestra.

  1. AGE REQUIREMENTS:

SYMPHONY:  12 – 19 years of age

PHILHARMONIC: 10 – 19 years of age

(Students younger than 12 who wish to audition for either Symphony or Philharmonic must submit a recommendation letter to the CSOYO manager from their private music teacher or school instrumental teacher prior to their audition).

ETUDE & PRELUDE:  up to age 19

  1. SCHOOL PROGRAMS: Students must be members of their school instrumental music program, if one exists. Wind and percussion students must be in their school band, and string students must be in their school orchestra, if these programs are offered at their school. Non-participation in the school instrumental music program requires an approval letter submitted to the CSOYO Manager from the school band or orchestra director, prior to the student’s audition.

 

APPLICATION:

  1. MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION: must be completed online. This application can be found on our website HERE. If you are unable to access this form online, please contact the CSOYO Manager at csoyo@chattanoogasymphony.org to request an application form via email.
  2. APPLICATION FEE: The non-refundable $20.00 audition fee can be paid online at our website HERE or a check can be mailed to CSO Youth Orchestras, Attn: Auditions, 701 Broad Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402. Audition Fees must be received in our office by Friday, April 19, 2019  Friday, June 19, 2020.
  3. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION (If required see above eligibility requirements)
  4. COMPLETED AUDITION (See Below)

 

AUDITION:

AUDITION DATES:             Monday, May 11, Thursday, May 14, and Monday, May 18, 2020

AUDITION TIMES:              Between 5:30 – 9:30 PM

AUDITION LOCATION:     First Baptist Church, 401 Gateway Avenue, Chattanooga TN 37402

Applicants will be invited to schedule an audition time on one of these nights once their application is complete.

NEW FOR 2020:

AUTOMATIC RENEWALAll eligible current 2019-2020 CSOYO members are automatically granted membership for the 2020-2021 season in the orchestra in which they are currently placed, and are not required to audition. Members will be sent a Letter of Intent in May to sign and return if they will accept their position. By June 19, 2020, all returning members must sign and return the Letter of Intent, complete a 2020 application form (to update their personal information) and pay the $20.00 audition fee to cover the cost of judges for a seating audition to be held later (see below). Members who have already applied to audition and paid their audition fee will only need to sign the Letter of Intent.

MOVE UP – Any current CSOYO members who would like to audition for a different orchestra must submit an application, pay the audition fee by June 19, 2020 and complete an audition.

Current members who audition to move up but are not selected may retain their place in their 2019-2020 orchestra if they wish to continue their membership.

AUDITIONS – May 11-18 in-person Auditions will be cancelled. VIDEO AUDITIONS will be held instead for all NEW applicants (not currently members in the 2019-2020 season) AND any current CSOYO members who wish to move up. All auditionees must submit a video of their audition via the Flipgrid platform between July 22-24, 2020. All applicants will be sent (via email) an ID and a Flipgrid CODE. On the audition dates, go to the URL, enter the code and upload your audition video (limit of 10 minutes in length). Videos can be submitted on any device with a camera that can connect to the internet, such as a phone, tablet or computer. (Auditionees without video capabilities should contact the CSOYO Manager for assistance).

                VIDEO GUIDELINES:

– The video must be uploaded between July 22-24, 2020 to the Flipgrid platform, following instructions that will be emailed to the applicant in early July.

– The video must contain all audition materials listed on the CSOYO website, including all scales (not just 1 or 2), the chromatic scale, and all excerpts for the selected orchestra.

– The video must be unedited, not cut together in any way – just one continuous shot.

– Due to the current unusual circumstances, auditions will not be BLIND this season. Auditionees should be visible in the video or the video will not be accepted.

– All Audition Videos must be received by midnight on Wednesday, July 24,2020. Late videos will not be considered.

PERCUSSIONISTS: Please contact the CSOYO Manager for specific audition instructions. We will work with you if you have limited access to percussion instrumentation during the summer.

Audition videos will be reviewed by a virtual panel of judges and all decisions will be final.

 

The 2020-2021 audition requirements are different than in previous years. Please find your orchestra and instrument, and read the requirements carefully. The requirements will vary by orchestra.

 

STRINGS auditioning for SYMPHONY, please prepare:

  1. Scales- prepare the listed scales and a chromatic scale. The judge will select one or two scales and the chromatic scale at the audition.
  2. Excerpts- Prepare excerpts #1, 2, 3 and 4

Strings auditioning for SYMPHONY will be considered for PHILHARMONIC also, and will be placed in the appropriate orchestra based on their overall scores.

 

STRINGS auditioning for PHILHARMONIC, please prepare:

  1. Scales- prepare the listed scales and a chromatic scale. The judge will select one or two scales and the chromatic scale at the audition
  2. Excerpts- prepare excerpts #3, 4, 5 and 6

Strings auditioning for PHILHARMONIC will be considered for ETUDE also, and will be placed in the appropriate orchestra based on their overall scores.

 

STRINGS auditioning for PRELUDE/ETUDE, please prepare

  1. Scales- prepare the listed scales and chromatic scale. The judge will select one or two scales and the chromatic scale at the audition.
  2. Excerpt- prepare excerpts #5 and #6

Strings auditioning for PRELUDE or ETUDE will have the same audition and will be placed in the appropriate orchestra based on their overall scores.

 

WOODWINDS and BRASS auditioning for SYMPHONY, please prepare:

  1. Scales- prepare the listed scales and chromatic scale. The judge will select one or two scales and the chromatic scale at the audition
  2. Excerpts- prepare all four excerpts

WOODWINDS and BRASS auditioning for SYMPHONY will be considered for PHILHARMONIC also and will be placed in the appropriate orchestra based on their overall scores.

 

WOODWINDS and BRASS auditioning for PHILHARMONIC, please prepare:

  1. Scales- prepare the listed scales and chromatic scale. The judge will select one or two scales and the chromatic scale at the audition.
  2. Excerpts- prepare excerpts #3 and #4

 

PERCUSSION auditioning for SYMPHONY/PHILHARMONIC, please prepare:

  1. Excerpts #1, #2, #3 and #4.
  2. A two-minute solo piece of your choice on xylophone.

 

APPLICATION DEADLINES:

Please submit membership applications and audition fees online, or to the CSO Office by Friday, April 17, 2020. Friday, June 19, 2020. Once you have completed your application and submitted the $20 audition fee, you will be invited to schedule an audition time online, starting in April of 2020. You will receive an email with further instructions regarding how to schedule your audition time then. you will receive instructions via email in early July for how to submit your video audition. Videos must be submitted between July 22-24, 2020. 

 

A calendar of the 2020-2021 CSOYO season will also be made available to you so that you can verify any scheduling conflicts that may prevent you from participating in the CSOYO prior to auditions. The CSOYO rehearses on Monday evenings during the school year and all rehearsals, venue rehearsals (on Sundays), and concerts are MANDATORY. Please review the Attendance, Concert Dress and other policies found on our website prior to your audition.

 

AUDITION RESULTS:

Following auditions, applicants will be placed in an orchestra or on an alternate list, and will be notified by letter by June 15, 2020.

NOTIFICATION: All Auditionees will be notified by mail of their audition results by August 1, 2020. Letters of intent will be included and must be signed and returned by those selected for membership.

SEATING AUDITIONS: All members (new and returning) will participate in seating auditions at the first regular season rehearsal. These auditions will consist of the excerpt selections from regular auditions only (no scales).

                SYMPHONY: Excerpts #1 and #2                 PHILHARMONIC: Excerpts #3 and #4            ETUDE: Excerpt #5                   Prelude: Excerpt #6

Seating order will be assigned for the first concert based on these auditions. Changes in seating order may be made at the discretion of the conductors later in the season.

Chair placements:

SYMPHONY/PHILHARMONIC: Symphony and Philharmonic Strings/Woodwinds/Brass members will be initially seated by score ranking using audition scores. We will also use a “rotation” system during the season, where members will switch chairs (part assignments for winds) every concert cycle. This practice will provide every student an opportunity to play at various chair lacements in the orchestra.

ETUDE/PRELUDE: Chair placement for ETUDE/PRELUDE will be made based on score rankings following auditions and may be adjusted during the season at the discretion of the conductor.

PRINCIPAL AUDITIONS will NOT be held this year. Principals will be seated initially based on audition scores. Players will be evaluated and possibly changed at the discretion of the conductor each concert cycle based on the musician’s leadership skills and performance in each concert.

TUITION: Tuition rates for all orchestras will remain the same as in previous years:

                SYMPHONY:                       $300.00

                PHILHARMONIC:              $250.00

                ETUDE:                                 $200.00

                PRELUDE:                            $150.00

Tuition deposits of $100.00 will be due on July 17, 2020 for members who wish to automatically renew their membership in their current orchestra. Balances will be due on August 14, 2020.

All other members selected or placed in August must return Letters of Intent, along with the full amount of tuition, by August 14, 2020.

ALL MEMBERS must have tuition paid IN FULL before they can attend regular rehearsals.
