The CSOYO desires that its members be in pleasing harmony, both musically and as a community. Musical harmony is achieved in rehearsal. Community is achieved in many ways, including our mentoring programs.
Mentorship with Professional Musicians: CSO SECTIONALS
The CSOYO provides opportunities throughout the season for YO musicians to interact with CSO or other professional musicians in our community. CSO Musicians lead coaching sectionals for the Symphony and Philharmonic orchestras once per concert cycle. CSO Musicians or other local professional musicians act as coaches for our chamber ensembles. CSO players sit “Side by Side” on a concert with our Symphony members each season. CSOYO Members should take advantage of these opportunities whenever they are available to them.
Mentorship among CSOYO Members: COMMUNITY
This season, the CSOYO will offer a new YO Buddies mentoring program. Returning CSOYO members are invited to become Mentors for new members and will be paired with them to welcome them, acclimate them to the YO, and be available for questions throughout the year. Planned activities and check-ins will be scheduled for each concert cycle, with additional contact on a voluntary basis. Returning members interested in being a Mentor should contact the CSOYO Manager as soon as they are selected.
YO Mixers are held at the beginning of the season to introduce members of the same section between orchestras. Symphony members can be a source of guidance for Philharmonic members with regards to technique, musicality, and general CSOYO advice via email/text, or in person before/after rehearsals.
Section leaders in all orchestras are encouraged to connect with each member of their section and provide leadership and information to their section throughout the season. Section leaders act as a liaison between the conductor and the section. Each YO member should be on a first-name basis with their section leader.
YO Buddies PROGRAM
The CSOYO wants to make sure each member in their first year with the CSOYO feels welcome, connected, and understands the CSOYO culture. We offer an optional mentoring program called YO Buddies to any new members who sign up. Returning CSOYO members are invited to become Mentors for new members and will be paired with them to welcome them, acclimate them to the YO, and be available for questions throughout the year. YO Buddies will be paired in the same orchestra whenever possible. Planned activities and check-ins will be scheduled for each concert cycle, with additional contact on a voluntary basis.
Participation is optional but members (new and returning) will receive credit in the YO Ambassador Program when they complete the required number of contacts with their YO Buddy. YO Buddy Mentors will be given a few suggested topics to cover in each contact. Mentors will be required to submit a short (1 paragraph) report to the CSOYO Manager after each scheduled contact. Additional contacts can be made as needed any time during the season. YO Ambassadors are recognized in programs and at concerts.
